BNP Secretary General Mirza Fakhrul Islam Alamgir has issued a stern warning to the interim government. He said that the national elections and referendum must be held on the same day by February 2026, otherwise the people will not accept it.
He said this at a rally in front of the BNP central office in Nayapaltan on Friday (November 7) ahead of a rally marking the historic November 7 Revolution and Solidarity Day.
Mirza Fakhrul said, “Various conspiracies are going on regarding the elections. We want to make it clear that the elections and referendum will be held on the same day. If anything goes beyond this, the people of the country will reject it.”
Referring to BNP acting chairman Tarique Rahman as the “leader of the modern democratic movement,” Fakhrul said, “Tarique Rahman announced a 31-point program for reforms. When the interim government took the initiative to implement those reforms, we supported it.”
He said, “Work has been going on for a year on the July Charter. Representatives of all political parties agreed. But later, a member of the advisory council suddenly held a press conference and said that the parties will be given seven days. So what is the meaning of the discussions that have been going on in the commission for so long? It is only creating confusion and chaos.’
Mirza Fakhrul further said, ‘A political party is demanding a referendum before the elections. We have clearly said that the referendum and the elections must be held on the same day. Holding two votes will increase the cost, create chaos and reduce the importance of the elections.’
He complained, ‘The interim government, whom we initially fully supported, is now taking decisions that are obstructing the election process.’
Addressing the youth of the country, Mirza Fakhrul said, ‘Let us move forward unitedly in respect of the sacrifices you have made, the thousands of our leaders and activists who have been martyred. Insha Allah, we will win this election and build a new Bangladesh.’
