The wait is over; Tarique Rahman to return home tomorrow

The wait is over; finally, BNP acting chairman Tarique Rahman is returning home tomorrow. This is his return to his birthplace, to his soil and to his mother. BNP leaders and activists are seeing his return to this country after overcoming personal and family oppression and grief as a historic comeback. They say that he has organized the party with a young mind and enthusiasm even from a long exile. This time, he will handle everything from the front.

When Tarique Rahman went to London for advanced treatment in 2008, he was devastated. He was very ill physically due to unspeakable torture on remand.

The last time he met his mother in the country was on September 11, 2008. After being released from the special prison, Khaleda Zia rushed to visit her son Tarique, who was undergoing treatment at the Bangladesh Medical University.

Tarique Rahman's political life is much like his own age. At the age of just 6, the Liberation War of 1971 was one of the most important events in the family. When Ziaur Rahman was on the battlefield, he was imprisoned with his mother Khaleda Zia along with his younger brother. When his father Ziaur Rahman was the president, Tarique was still the teenage son of the house.

Leaders and activists say that when Khaleda Zia was leading the BNP in the anti-Ershad movement on the streets, university student Tarique Rahman was immersed in the thoughts of various thinkers and philosophers. From Socrates, Plato, Aristotle, Thomas Hobbes, John Locke, Rousseau to Voltaire or Karl Marx - he was enriching himself from the lessons of world politics and human rights. He had to be under house arrest several times with Khaleda Zia.

His formal political journey began in 1988. As a primary member of the Gabtoli Upazila BNP in his native Bogra. He joined the campaign in the 1991 election. Tarique Rahman started intellectual discussions with the aim of identifying and solving the problems of the grassroots in the 2001 election. In 2002, he gradually led the party. Since 2005, he has been roaming around the villages, on the roads and in the countryside.

Then came the controversial 2007. He was released on remand on September 3 after being seriously ill, but did not return home. He had to leave the hospital for London, UK, on September 11.

In 2009, Tarique Rahman became the party's senior vice chairman. It was his turn to turn around after going through various political ups and downs. Activists say that he thought about a developing Bangladesh while sitting in a developed country. He was filled with courage even while worrying about the party's leaders and activists who were victims of oppression, torture, disappearances, and murders.

The leaders and activists claim that the acting chairman of BNP was a great mastermind behind the scenes throughout the 2024 coup. He played a perfect strategic role in organizing and energizing the activists. On the one hand, he had a keen eye on the movement to overthrow the government, and on the other hand, he had the idea of reforming the state. In addition to supporting the interim government, he also kept urging elections on the importance of a political government.

Finally, all the speculations, fears, and anxieties are going to end. The activists feel inspired. They say this is a unique return to the homeland of nationalism and patriotism.

Tarique Rahman is facing a difficult test wearing the fragrance of this alluvial soil. His followers see his return as the beginning of a new chapter.
