Rumeen Farhana begins election campaign with grave visit

Rumeen Farhana begins election campaign with grave visit

BNP's co-international affairs secretary Rumin Farhana has started her election campaign in Brahmanbaria-2 constituency as an independent candidate by visiting the graves of her grandparents after not getting the party's nomination.

On Thursday afternoon, she buried her grandparents in the family graveyard in Islampur village of Budhanti Union in Bijoynagar Upazila. Rumin Farhana's grandparents were residents of this village.

Ali Hossain, a former leader of the local Jubo Dal, collected the nomination papers from the executive officer. Rumin Farhana said that her symbol as an independent candidate is likely to be a duck.

Maulana Junaid Al Habib of BNP's alliance partner Jamiat Ulema-e-Islam Bangladesh has been declared the alliance's candidate in this constituency. He will contest the election with the palm tree symbol. Rumin Farhana called the decision 'disrespectful'.

At that time, Rumin Farhana told reporters, “I have been fighting against injustice for 17 years and have struggled for people’s rights. The only demand of the locals was that they should not field any alliances (candidates). But that demand was not heard. People will respond to it through votes.”

He also said, “I have started the election campaign from today. I seek the prayers and support of the people of the area.”

According to a section of locals, although Rumin Farhana is active in the area, she did not get the nomination due to the party’s decision. However, her independent candidacy could complicate the political equation of the constituency.

After BNP nominated Junaid Al Habib for the Brahmanbaria-2 constituency, Rumin Farhana first announced to leave the party and become an independent candidate. Now that her election campaign has officially started, a direct contest has been created in the constituency.

Meanwhile, Rumin Farhana has informed that the full process of her nomination will be completed by December 29, the last date for filing nomination papers.
