Bangladesh's Tamim Iqbal has been awarded Honorary Life Membership of the Marylebone Cricket Club (MCC), widely regarded as the guardian of the laws of cricket, alongside four other distinguished cricketers.
The other recipients are New Zealand's Suzie Bates and Sophie Devine, Australia's Mel Jones, and India's Cheteshwar Pujara. MCC announced the honours in a statement on Monday.
In its tribute to Tamim, MCC described him as "one of the finest batters in Bangladesh's cricket history." The club noted that since making his Test debut in 2008, Tamim has scored more than 5,000 Test runs, the second-highest tally for Bangladesh.
MCC also highlighted that Tamim is one of the few Bangladeshi cricketers to have his name on the prestigious Lord's Honours Boards after scoring a century against England in 2010. He has amassed more than 8,000 runs in 243 One-Day Internationals, the highest by any Bangladeshi batter.
The statement further noted that Tamim was named one of the Wisden Cricketers of the Year and Wisden's Test Cricketer of the Year in 2011. It also mentioned that he recently assumed office as the youngest president of the Bangladesh Cricket Board.
