Turkey to Buy F-35c from the United States

Turkey to Buy F-35c from the United States

Turkey is set to purchase advanced F-35 fighter jets from the United States, with Washington simultaneously lifting sanctions imposed on Ankara.

Turkish President Recep Tayyip Erdogan shared this information following a meeting with US President Donald Trump, who is attending the NATO summit, on Tuesday, July 7.

He said positive progress has been made both on the purchase of F-35 fighter jets from the US and on securing American jet engines for Turkey's domestically developed "Kaan" fighter jet, with an agreement on both matters reaching its final stage.

Erdogan added that during discussions on the F-35 program, Turkey was promised five fighter jets, and that they believe President Trump has made a separate personal commitment on this matter. He said they hope the positive signals received earlier will now materialize.

He further said that President Trump generally keeps his promises, and that they therefore expect a positive decision on the F-35 issue to emerge from this summit.

The Turkish president also expressed optimism regarding the procurement of American jet engines for the domestic "Kaan" fighter jet, saying Trump had hinted at "good news" for him, and that there may be an opportunity at the summit to thank him for that good news.

Meanwhile, Donald Trump said that despite existing restrictions imposed by Congress, he would soon make a decision on selling fighter jets to Turkey. He also indicated that lifting the sanctions imposed on Turkey over its purchase of the Russian S-400 air defense system is under consideration.

After Turkey purchased the S-400 system from Russia, the United States removed it from the F-35 program in 2019 and subsequently imposed sanctions on the country. Since then, discussions between the two countries on the F-35 issue and defense cooperation have continued.
