The accident occurred around 6:00am when a bus of Islam Paribahan, travelling from Patuakhali, reportedly lost control, broke through the road divider and entered the opposite lane before crashing into an Akash Paribahan bus heading from Uttara to Gulistan.
The deceased were identified as Laiju Begum, 38, her husband Kabir Jamaddar, 47, Khushi Begum, 35, and Robiul, 22. They were residents of Mongla in Bagerhat and Mirzaganj in Patuakhali.
Witnesses said the collision severely damaged both buses and caused heavy traffic congestion in the area, leaving Eid holiday travellers stranded for hours.
Police said the driver and helper of the Islam Paribahan bus fled the scene immediately after the crash.
The injured were rushed to Kurmitola General Hospital and Dhaka Medical College Hospital for treatment. Several victims remain in critical condition, according to hospital sources.
Sub-Inspector Nesar Uddin of Bhatara Police Station said the road was crowded at the time of the accident. He alleged that the Islam Paribahan bus was being driven recklessly at high speed when it lost control and hit the oncoming bus.
Authorities later removed the damaged vehicles using wreckers, and traffic movement in the area returned to normal.
