Jatiya Kabi Kazi Nazrul Islam University (JKKNIU) has marked its debut in the Nature Index Institution Rankings of Springer Nature, securing the 17th position among academic institutions in Bangladesh. According to the newly released 2025–26 index, JKKNIU holds a global rank. The university also performed well in subject-specific categories, ranking 13th in health sciences and 16th in biological sciences at the national level.

Remarkably, JKKNIU owes its inclusion entirely to the contributions of a single academic - Dr. Md. Nuruzzaman Khan, an associate professor in the Department of Population Science. The university achieved a Share score of 0.13, based on three of Dr. Khan’s high-impact research papers. Dr. Khan is a highly accomplished researcher with over 184 leading global publications, including 44 Scopus-indexed studies.

Reflecting on the achievement, A/Professor Dr. Nuruzzaman Khan said, "I believe this is not only a personal achievement, but also a positive reflection of the growing research potential of JKKNIU and Bangladesh more broadly. I sincerely hope it will encourage students and early-career researchers to believe that impactful global research can emerge from our institutions as well.

He added, “Improving the research environment at JKKNIU would require long-term restructuring in several areas. These include strengthening research training from the undergraduate level, reducing unnecessary administrative barriers, supporting faculty with protected research time, improving access to international collaborations and research funding, and developing a culture that values originality, integrity, and scientific curiosity."

Dr. Md. Nuruzzaman Khan also added that while the Nature Index measures a very specific subset of 145 highly influential journals, his colleagues and students frequently publish valuable work in other prestigious formats that equally deserve recognition. He remains optimistic that with better institutional backing and mentorship, JKKNIU's talented student body can achieve even greater milestones internationally.
