PM Tarique Rahman Returns After State Visits

Prime Minister Tarique Rahman has returned home after successfully concluding his first official overseas tour, undertaken at the invitation of the governments of Malaysia and China. His spouse, Dr. Zubaida Rahman, accompanied him throughout the six-day visit.

During the first two days of the tour (21–22 June), the Prime Minister visited Malaysia, where he held a one-on-one meeting and bilateral talks with Malaysian Prime Minister Anwar Ibrahim. He also participated in a joint press briefing and several official state engagements.

On 22 June, following the conclusion of his visit to Malaysia, the Prime Minister departed for Dalian, China. Upon his arrival at Dalian Zhoushuizi International Airport, he was received by Bai Ying, Vice Governor of Liaoning Province, and was accorded a red-carpet state reception on behalf of the Chinese government.

On 23–24 June, the Prime Minister attended the World Economic Forum (WEF) Summer Davos in Dalian, Liaoning Province, where he exchanged views with heads of government and global leaders from various countries.

After arriving in Beijing on 24 June, he remained there on an official visit until 26 June. During his stay, he held bilateral meetings with Chinese President Xi Jinping, Chairman of the Standing Committee of the National People’s Congress Zhao Leji, and Premier of the State Council Li Qiang, while also participating in several state functions.

On Friday (26 June 2026) at 7:45 p.m., the China Southern Airlines flight carrying the Prime Minister landed at Hazrat Shahjalal International Airport in Dhaka. He was welcomed at the airport by BNP Secretary General Mirza Fakhrul Islam Alamgir, along with several cabinet members, advisers, Members of Parliament, and senior government officials.

On the final day of his China visit, the Prime Minister held a bilateral meeting with President Xi Jinping at the Great Hall of the People in Beijing. During the meeting, the two leaders jointly announced the establishment of a Bangladesh–China Community with a Shared Future, reaffirming their shared commitment to elevating bilateral strategic cooperation to a higher level.

Later the same day, the Prime Minister met with Zhao Leji, Chairman of the Standing Committee of the National People’s Congress, and subsequently visited the Museum of the Communist Party of China (CPC).

At 5:16 p.m. Beijing time, the Prime Minister departed Beijing Daxing International Airport aboard a China Southern Airlines flight bound for Dhaka. He was seen off by Yue Xiaoyong, Special Envoy of the Chinese President, and was accorded an official farewell ceremony in accordance with state protocol.

Earlier, on 25 June, Chinese Premier Li Qiang formally welcomed the Prime Minister at the Great Hall of the People with a red-carpet reception and a Guard of Honour. The two leaders later held bilateral talks focusing on Bangladesh–China relations, trade, investment, and broader areas of cooperation.

Following the meeting, 13 Memoranda of Understanding (MoUs) were signed between Bangladesh and China, laying a stronger foundation for enhanced strategic and economic cooperation. The Prime Minister also attended a state banquet hosted in his honour.

Earlier that morning, the Prime Minister held separate meetings with Liu Jianchao, Minister of the International Department of the Communist Party of China, and Li Guoying, China’s Minister of Water Resources. He later delivered the keynote address at the “Invest Bangladesh” seminar organized by the Bangladesh Investment Development Authority (BIDA), highlighting Bangladesh’s investment potential. The engagements focused on expanding bilateral trade and investment, water resource management, infrastructure development, and strengthening mutual cooperation.

On 24 June, the Prime Minister participated as an invited guest in the WEF Plenary Session in Dalian. On the sidelines of the event, he held discussions with several heads of government on strengthening bilateral ties and addressing issues of mutual interest. He also joined a group photo session with world leaders.

Later that afternoon, he travelled from Dalian to Beijing aboard a high-speed (bullet) train. Upon his arrival at Beijing Chaoyang Railway Station at 5:35 p.m., he was received by Sun Meijun, Minister of the General Administration of Customs of China (GACC) and Secretary of the CPC Committee. He was accorded a red-carpet reception and a formal Guard of Honour, before being escorted by a special motorcade to the Diaoyutai State Guesthouse, where the Chinese government hosted another official welcoming ceremony.

On 23 June, the Prime Minister addressed the WEF Summer Davos session titled “Climate Leadership in a Shifting Global Landscape.” In his remarks, he emphasized the importance of partnerships, technology, financing, and global cooperation in building climate resilience.

During the forum, the Prime Minister also held a courtesy meeting with WEF President and CEO Børge Brende, who invited him to attend the World Economic Forum Annual Meeting in Davos, Switzerland.

On 22 June, Malaysian Prime Minister Anwar Ibrahim formally welcomed the Prime Minister at Perdana Putra in Putrajaya with a red-carpet reception and Guard of Honour. The two leaders held both private and bilateral meetings, participated in a joint press briefing, and attended a luncheon and cultural programme hosted at the Malaysian Prime Minister’s official residence. At the conclusion of the visit, Prime Minister Tarique Rahman expressed his gratitude to Prime Minister Anwar Ibrahim and his spouse for their warm hospitality and gracious reception.

Earlier, on Sunday (21 June 2026) at 2:45 p.m., the Prime Minister departed Hazrat Shahjalal International Airport aboard a Biman Bangladesh Airlines flight for Kuala Lumpur. The aircraft landed at Kuala Lumpur International Airport (KLIA) at 8:35 p.m. local time, where he was received by Malaysia’s Minister in the Prime Minister’s Department (Religious Affairs), Dr. Zulkifli Hasan. He was subsequently accorded a formal Guard of Honour in accordance with Malaysian state protocol.

It is noteworthy that, after assuming office as Prime Minister on 17 February, Malaysia became Mr. Tarique Rahman’s first official foreign destination, while China marked his second official overseas visit as head of government.
