Three people have been killed and 558 others remain missing after severe flooding and landslides struck the Tibetan side of the China-Nepal border, Chinese state media reported on Thursday, citing local officials.Among those missing are 260 foreign nationals.According to AFP, the disaster struck on Wednesday morning when a powerful flow of mud and debris crashed into buildings in the border region.More than a thousand rescue workers were deployed to search for survivors, using search dogs and drones.Surveillance camera footage from the Chinese border area showed dozens of people running for their lives as the powerful mudflow rushed toward them.Li Chipu, a member of China's paramilitary People's Armed Police, told state broadcaster CCTV that rescue operations were facing several major challenges. These include instability at a lake reservoir upstream and narrow, difficult mountain roads.CCTV reported that large vehicles and heavy equipment have not yet been able to reach the main disaster-hit area. However, surrounding roads remain open, allowing relief supplies to be transported through alternative routes.China's state news agency Xinhua reported that authorities have deployed around 800 personnel and more than 150 vehicles to the border area.The fire service has also deployed 431 personnel equipped with search dogs, life-detection scanners and small boats to assist in the search for missing people.Footage broadcast by CCTV showed members of the People's Armed Police wearing camouflage uniforms and orange jackets while using shovels to clear debris. Rescue workers were also seen operating drones during the search operation.CCTV said civilian and military aircraft carrying relief supplies have already arrived in Tibet.However, the risk of further disasters remains high. Heavy rainfall overnight has increased the possibility of a second wave of landslides and falling rocks from surrounding mountains, posing additional challenges to the ongoing rescue operation.
