Opposition lawmaker and member of the Parliamentary Standing Committee on the Ministry of Finance, Hasnat Abdullah, has alleged that the BNP is considering a new formula for forming a caretaker government, similar to the arrangement seen in 2006.

Speaking to reporters after a meeting of the Parliamentary Standing Committee on the Ministry of Finance at the National Parliament on Sunday, Hasnat also accused the party of considering what he described as a deceptive political arrangement and of using religious sentiment for political purposes.

Hasnat further alleged that the BNP government, like the previous Awami League government, was attempting to place the banking sector under the influence of oligarchic groups.

Referring to the Bank Resolution Act, 2026, he said Section 18(a) had to be repealed following pressure from the International Monetary Fund (IMF).

He also said he had raised objections during the committee meeting to a proposal for providing Tk20,000 crore in loans to distressed industries.

According to Hasnat, distributing the proposed loans through Bangladesh Bank rather than commercial banks could create opportunities for political influence. He expressed concern that businesses aligned with the BNP could potentially benefit from such a process.

Hasnat also pointed to a sharp decline in private-sector credit growth, saying it had reached a record low and was restricting opportunities for employment. He called for stronger measures to prevent loan defaulters from securing new loans.

He further accused the BNP of maintaining a “dual position” on the referendum, saying the party's stance had contributed to a decline in public confidence.

Meanwhile, committee member Saiful Alam Milon said the government, including the finance minister, had responded positively to proposals raised by opposition members.

He said the proposals would be considered at the committee's next meeting.

Milon also called for issues concerning the government's position on the July Charter and the note of dissent to be placed before parliament.

Referring to the home minister's statement in parliament describing the July Charter as an “endless document of deception”, Milon said the public would be able to judge the matter if those who had signed the document themselves later characterised it as deceptive.

He said he did not wish to engage in what he described as a meaningless debate over the issue.
