Argentina's 3-2 win over Egypt was not just a dramatic comeback it stands as one of the rarest events in World Cup history. There had been no previous instance of a team trailing by two goals as late as the 78th minute and still winning a World Cup match within regulation time. According to Opta analysts, that is precisely the improbable feat achieved by the reigning world champions against Egypt.
At one point during the Round of 16 match in Atlanta, Argentina looked set to be eliminated. Egypt took the lead through Yasser Ibrahim's goal in the 15th minute. Argentina were then awarded a penalty but failed to equalize, as Egyptian goalkeeper Mostafa Shobeir saved Lionel Messi's shot.
When Mostafa Zico doubled Egypt's lead to 2-0 in the 67th minute, the match began to carry the scent of one of the World Cup's biggest upsets. At that point, not only Argentina's hopes of defending their title but Messi's entire World Cup campaign appeared to be in serious jeopardy.
But everything changed in the closing stages. In the 79th minute, Cristian Romero headed in a goal from Messi's cross. According to Opta's calculations, Argentina's win probability stood at just 0.6% at that point. Yet four minutes later, Messi himself levelled the score with a left-footed strike. Then, in the second minute of stoppage time, Enzo Fernandez scored the winning header from a Lautaro Martinez cross.
From 2-0 down to 3-2. In a matter of minutes, Argentina not only defeated Egypt but also wrote a new chapter in World Cup history. This victory kept alive Argentina's hopes of a second consecutive title and Messi's dream of another World Cup triumph.
Egypt played with courage. Shobeir made crucial saves, and Salah and his teammates rattled Argentina. But in the end, it was the character of the world champions that made the difference. This team does not give up even when everything appears to be against them and that Atlanta night proved it once again.
