Three weeks after homemaker Beena Rani Ray (58) was beaten to death inside her own home in Chandina, Cumilla, police have failed to uncover the motive or identify the perpetrators. Despite a case being filed against unidentified individuals, the lack of visible progress has left the victim's family deeply frustrated.On the evening of August 17, Beena Rani Ray was chanting mantras as part of her religious rituals at her home in Barkait village under Chandina upazila. Unidentified assailants entered the house during this time and severely beat her. Relatives rescued her and brought her to the Chandina Upazila Health Complex. Following preliminary treatment, she was transferred to Cumilla Medical College Hospital, where the attending doctor declared her dead.The victim’s husband, Dilip Kumar Ray, a retired post office employee, shared that the couple lived alone in the house, as their three sons work in different parts of the country. On the evening of the incident, around 7:45 PM, he left for a local tea shop while his wife remained inside, performing her rituals.Dilip Kumar Ray said that around 8:30 PM, he learned from locals that unknown attackers had severely injured his wife. Rushing back home, he found her unconscious with a bleeding head injury."When I left the house, my wife had locked the door from the inside," Dilip Kumar Ray stated. "She never opened the door to anyone unfamiliar at night. However, after the attack, the door was wide open with no signs of forced entry. I suspect someone known to her committed this murder."Tapas Kumar Ray, the victim's youngest son, expressed his grief: "We have no idea who killed my mother or why. That is why we filed a murder case against unknown suspects. Nearly three weeks have passed, and we still don't know the truth behind her death. We don't even know if we ever will."Local residents noted that very few Hindu families reside in that area of Barkait village. They described Beena Rani Ray’s family as peaceful and harmless. The brutal killing of a woman inside her own home during evening prayers has sparked fear and anxiety throughout the community, prompting demands for a swift investigation and the arrest of the culprits.Leaders of the Bangladesh Puja Udjapan Parishad (Cumilla District and Chandina Upazila branches) strongly condemned the incident and demanded the immediate arrest of the killers.Narayan Chandra Sarkar, Acting General Secretary of the Cumilla District Puja Udjapan Parishad, stated: "The inability of the administration to uncover the mystery behind the sudden, brutal murder of a Hindu woman in her own home is deeply alarming. We strongly protest and condemn this incident and demand the immediate identification and arrest of the actual killers."The victim's family and neighbors remain frustrated by the lack of visible investigative progress. They have urged authorities to thoroughly investigate all angles—including whether the attack was planned, how the assailants entered the house, and whether prior enmity or other motives were involved.When asked about the situation, Officer-in-Charge (OC) of Chandina Police Station, Md. Nuruzzaman, said, "We are actively working on this case. In the interest of the ongoing investigation, further details cannot be disclosed at this moment."
