Chief Prosecutor of the International Crimes Tribunal, Md. Aminul Islam, has said that the investigation into the case involving killings and crimes against humanity committed at Shapla Chattar on May 5, 2013, has concluded.
He shared this with the media at his office on Wednesday, July 8.
He said the draft investigation report on the allegations concerning the killings carried out nationwide in 2013, allegedly on Sheikh Hasina's orders in connection with Hefazat-e-Islam's program, is currently in its final stage of review. The final investigation report will be submitted to the Chief Prosecutor's office very soon. Once the investigation report is received, the prosecution will prepare a formal charge and submit it to the tribunal.
The Chief Prosecutor further said that the tribunal is currently on recess. He expressed hope that once the tribunal's judicial proceedings resume on July 21, the formal charge sheet in the Shapla Chattar massacre case will be submitted, subject to the filing of the investigation report. He said the number of potential accused in the case could range between 28 and 30.
The Chief Prosecutor further said that evidence has been found against the former prime minister, the then home minister, former chiefs of several forces, and a number of journalists in this case. Based on the investigation report, they too could become accused. However, he said it would not be possible to release a complete list of potential accused before the investigation report and formal charge sheet are submitted.
