A Dhaka court has ordered the seizure of the income tax records of former Shipping Minister Shahjahan Khan and his wife, Syeda Rokeya Begum.
The order was issued on Monday by Dhaka Metropolitan Senior Special Judge Shahjahan Kabir after hearing two separate petitions filed by the Anti-Corruption Commission (ACC).
According to the ACC's petition, Shahjahan Khan allegedly abused his authority as a public servant to acquire movable and immovable assets worth Tk 113.6 million that were disproportionate to his known sources of income. The petition also alleges that he laundered money through suspicious transactions totaling Tk 866.9 million across nine bank accounts. An ACC case has already been filed against him under the relevant anti-corruption laws.
The ACC further stated that Shahjahan Khan is a registered taxpayer. Under Section 309(3)(a) of the Income Tax Act, 2023 (Act No. 12 of 2023), a court order is required to obtain an individual's income tax returns and related records. Therefore, it requested the court to seize the original tax documents and direct the authorities to provide certified copies for use during the investigation.
In a separate petition, the ACC alleged that Syeda Rokeya Begum, in collusion with her husband, unlawfully acquired assets worth Tk 44.7 million that were inconsistent with her known sources of income by abusing Shahjahan Khan's official position for personal financial gain. A corruption case has also been filed against the couple in connection with the allegations.
The ACC informed the court that Syeda Rokeya Begum is also a registered taxpayer. Citing the same provision of the Income Tax Act, 2023, the commission sought an order to seize her original income tax returns and related documents, along with certified copies for examination during the ongoing investigation.
